Sustainable Solutions for On-Site Recycling of Cement Blocks at Airport in India

21-08-2023

Airport in India faced a significant challenge when it came to recycling and reusing cement blocks excavated from their runways. These materials needed to be efficiently managed and repurposed to reduce costs and promote sustainable practices. The airport authorities sought a smarter solution for recycling the cement blocks and managing the resulting dust and finally came across the MB Crusher and Screening buckets which completely re-defined their ways to manage those materials.

Efficient Recycling and Repurposing of Cement Blocks

To address these challenges, the airport turned to MB crusher attachments. The MB-S18 screening attachment was deployed in combination with the Kobelco SK220 XD LC, while the BF90.3 crusher attachment was utilized alongside the CAT 320D.

By employing MB crusher attachments, the airport:

  • eliminated the need for external crushing facilities;
  • reduced transportation costs;
  • converted the excavated cement blocks into Granular Sub Base (GSB) material which could be used in various applications beyond airport projects.

Promoting Sustainability through Waste Reduction

The utilization of MB attachments brought forth several benefits, enhancing the circular economy at the airport' job sites.

  • It allowed for the recycling and reuse of materials, enabling the transformation of cement blocks into GSB material suitable for road construction, foundational work, and other related projects.
  • It led to a significant reduction in waste. Instead of incurring costs for disposal, the airport successfully repurposed the excavated cement blocks, contributing to sustainable construction practices and minimizing the environmental impact.
  • It allowed an efficient resource utilization through careful management of the dust and waste generated during the crushing process.

Optimized Resource Utilization and Dust Management

The airport screened the dust and ensured that the by-products were used in appropriate applications or properly managed. This approach further enhanced the sustainability of the projects by optimizing the available resources.

By employing the Kobelco SK220 XD LC with the MB-S18 and the CAT 320D with the BF90.3, the airport successfully achieved their goals of recycling and reusing the excavated cement blocks while effectively managing the crushing process' by-products.

These solutions not only reduced costs and transportation lead times but also promoted:

  • sustainable construction practices;
  • waste reduction;
  • efficient resource management.
