3 ways to solve the problems surrounding construction sites in enclosed spaces

19-07-2021
Underground construction sites such as tunnels and mines have specific needs and challenges, including:

 HARD-TO-ACCESS LOCATIONS
 RESTRICTED MANEUVERING ROOM
 NEED TO CONTROL VIBRATIONS

Thanks to MB Crusher’s units, our customers have turned these limitations into economic advantages.

HARD-TO-ACCESS LOCATIONS: WORKING INSIDE THE TUNNELS

In Baja California, Mexico, a Caterpillar mini-excavator created an underground drainage tunnel. Using a traditional hammer created too many vibrations, too much excess material, and wasn’t accurate.

The MB-R500 drum cutter made it possible to do the job by limiting the vibrations without creating cracks in the walls.

With just one accessory they were able to:

  • not damage the ground;
  • work safely;
  • work precisely in tight and dark spaces only a few vehicles can access.

LIMITED ROOM TO MANEUVER: CREATE A TUNNEL INSIDE A MINE

MB Crusher’s units arrive to the jobsite attached to the machine and do not require additional space to move around. All our customers needed was their Komatsu PC200 and an MB-R800 drum cutter to bore a tunnel inside a mine: they precisely dug the walls while limiting waste material, which would have created another inconvenience in an area where space is limited.

Using the excavator present on the job site and one of MB Crusher’s drum cutter, our customer managed to:

  • only dig what’s necessary;
  • avoid generating too much waste material;
  • operate with little room to maneuver.

REDUCING EXPLOSIVES: MINING

Inside a mine in Albania, the iron-nickel extraction happened using an MB-R700 drum cutter attached to their 18,000 pounds Bobcat 442, eliminating the things associated with using explosives, such as costs and safety issues.

By replacing the explosives with MB Crusher’s drum cutter not only limits vibrations, but makes the extraction safer and faster, and the material’s size obtained is more uniform than what they’d get from an explosion.

Additionally, a simple replacement made work safer and faster while also eliminating:

  • The concerns surrounding costs and safety when using explosives;
  • The vibrations generated.
