Largest Infrastructure Project In Europe – Fehmarn Belt Link
This is a very important project of connecting Denmark and Germany. The project consists of a double-track electrified rail line and a four-lane motorway that will enhance connectivity across the Baltic Sea region.
Connecting cities of Stockholm, Copenhagen, Hamburg and Berlin, the fixed link is slated to be the largest infrastructure project in Europe.
The Danish government has established Fehmarn Belt, a subsidiary of the state-owned Sund & Bælt Holding, to investigate and design the coast-to-coast link. Later, the Fehmarn Belt Company will construct and operate the link.
The link will replace energy consuming ferries and cut the travel time between Hamburg and Copenhagen by one hour.
Subsea tunnels between the islands of Streymoy and Eysturoy and between Streymoy and Sandoy
This is the biggest infrastructure expansion on the Faroe Islands ever.
The Sandoy tunnel connects the island of Sandoy to the greater part of Faroese infrastructure. The tunnel will be 10.6 kilometres long. The travel distance between Streymoy and Sandoy will be shortened significantly, however the biggest advantage will be the fact that people can travel to and from the island at any time during the day.
The Eysturoy tunnel connects Skálafjørður and Tórshavn together with a subsea tunnel, which will be a full 11 kilometres long. The tunnel will shorten the travel distance from Tórshavn to Runavík/Strendur from 55 kilometres to 17 kilometres.
